In a move to boost research and innovation initiatives, the European Commission has given the green light to a significant increase in the 2024 budget of Horizon Europe, the EU’s flagship research programme. The amendment provides an additional €1.4 billion for the year. Key highlights of the amendment include €648 million allocation for EU missions aimed at tackling pressing societal challenges. For example these missions include ambitious goals such as restoring thousands of kilometres of free-flowing rivers or facilitating climate city contracts with over 100 urban centres. Significant support will also be given to the ‘New European Bauhaus’ initiative, which aims to integrate the principles of the European Green Deal into everyday life.

In order to promote integration and attract new talent, actions have been introduced to provide researchers with more flexibility and opportunities within the programme. The adopted texts of the Work Programme amendment have been made available on the Funding & Tenders portal (Missions document here). Calls, themes and actions will also be published and searchable on the Funding & Tenders portal as usual. In addition, information days will be held on 25 and 26 April 2024 to provide stakeholders with an insight into the programme update and opportunities for engagement.
