Resource description:
STREAMLINE is a new format for semi-structured, one-on-one interviews. In its current form STREAMLINE consists of a set of colorful, laminated A3 canvasses. Set in the future, each canvas invites the interviewee to set out their vision on a particular topic through a series of questions and tiles. Taking user experience as a starting point, STREAMLINE's open and interactive format provides an engaging platform gathering rich data for socio-cultural valuation of Ecosystem Services.Responses are captured in a database, coded for themes and clustered into 'streams'. These form the input for a 'social SWOT' identifying Common Grounds, Tensions, Opportunities and Threats. Finally, the outcomes are presented back to the target audience.
Requirements:
- A set of clearly defined questions to elicit social values.
- A set of images that reflect the range of probable answers.
- Text descriptions (optional).
Advantages:
- This tool can be applied to most ecosystem services.
- It is flexible and can be applied anywhere, current applications focus on local and regional levels.
- The tool can be used with any stakeholder group, regardless of their knowledge of and interest in ecosystem services.
Constraints:
- If used as a tool for academic research (ie maximising depth and richness of data) the time required for analysis is significant (if used as public engagement/workshop tool this is less limiting).
- Images may need to be tailored to a local or regional context.
Additional information:
At the moment we're testing the format in the Inner Forth area for socio-cultural valuations of Ecosystem Services, with hopes of expanding its application to different geographic areas and theoretical domains.
