EnRoute

EnRoute stands for Enhancing Resilience of urban ecosystems through green infrastructure. EnRoute is a project of the European Commission in the framework of the EU Biodiversity Strategy and the Green Infrastructure Strategy. EnRoute provides scientific knowledge of how urban ecosystems can support urban planning at different stages of policy and for various spatial scales and how to help policy-making for sustainable cities. It aims to promote the application of urban green infrastructure at local level and delivers guidance on the creation, management and governance of urban green infrastructure. Importantly, it illustrates how collaboration between and across different policy levels can lead to concrete green infrastructure policy setting.

EnRoute Webinar: Oslo and Poznan present their case studies (23 March at 11:00)

Dear EnRoute colleagues,

We organise a webinar on Friday 23 March from 11.00 to 12:00. During the webinar the Oslo and Poznan city labs will briefly present their work: what policy issue is at stake and which indicators/methods did the experts use to address these challenges.

We hope that other city labs can join the webinar to learn from the Oslo and Poznan experience.

If you are available, please fix the date and time.

We will use webex for the seminar. An invitation will follow by e-mail.

How to measure the condition of urban ecosystems? Here is an innovative approach tested in Karlovo (Bulgaria), one of the EnRoute city labs

This paper published by Bulgarian scientists in One Ecosystem explains how a combination of in-situ inspections of individual urban trees and observations based on remote sensing of urban vegetation can help assess the health of urban ecosystems. Both methods are applied to different urban green spaces in Karlovo and deliver an insight on the vitality of the tree communities in the city.

5th MAES report on ecosystem condition is out.

The fifth MAES report presents indicators for mapping and assessment of ecosystem condition at European level. A set with specific indicators is available for assessment of ecosystem condition per ecosystem type. A core set with key indicators is available to support an integrated ecosystem assessment across ecosystem type.

The report contains an update of the indicators which measure the condition of urban ecosystems.

EnRoute progress report is available.

Here is a link to the EnRoute progress report.

The report contains a set of  policy questions collected by the 20 EnRoute city labs with respect to urban green infrastructure and identifies which indicators of the MAES analytical framework can be used to support local policy.

The report also describes the datasets and models that will be used for an EU wide assessment of urban ecosystems and their services.

The report contains a first proposal for an online survey on the functionality of...

Trento city lab working on nature-based recreation: first results and next steps

Nature-based recreation has been acknowledged as a key issue for the city of Trento, also in relation to policies aimed at increasing the availability of urban green areas and providing equal opportunities across the city. Compared to other urban contexts, day-to-day nature-based recreation in Trento presents some peculiar characters: due to the location of the city, many opportunities for “non-urban” recreational activities are available and enjoyed by citizens in the immediate surroundings of their homes (e.g., hiking, mountain-biking, climbing) However, the contribution of the different...
