Solutions to support urban nature – Guide and inspiration from city Poznań | Invest4Nature

Between 2017 and 2022, the City of Poznań participated in two significant EU initiatives: the CONNECTING Nature project under the Horizon 2020 Programme and the Health&Greenspace project as part of the Urbact Programme, alongside other European cities. These projects centered on assessing the effects of nature-based solutions (NbS) and green infrastructure on various aspects, including climate adaptation, heat stress mitigation, social cohesion, mental and physical well-being, and economic development. By implementing NbS, Poznań not only advanced its environmental objectives but also enhanced the quality of life for residents, strengthened community involvement, and generated new employment opportunities.

Recognizing the need to share these valuable experiences, Poznań’s team from Project Coordination and Urban Regeneration Office developed a comprehensive handbook. This resource organizes lessons learned into an accessible format, tailored for local officials, contractors, and collaborators curious about NbS and their tangible benefits.

The guide stands out with its practical content and visual appeal. It features 17 illustrated cards presenting various NbS examples, a glossary of key terms, and a dedicated chapter on funding opportunities. The team collaborated with scientists, graphic designers, and photographers to blend research with real-life applications, ensuring a user-friendly, visually engaging format. A fun, cartoon-inspired design helps demystify concepts while appealing to a broad audience, from policymakers and practitioners to residents.

In addition to defining NbS and showcasing their ecological, social, and economic benefits, the handbook highlights opportunities for public-private partnerships and cross-departmental collaboration. By doing so, it aims to inspire investment, encourage cooperation, and break down silos in implementing NbS projects.

Ultimately, this handbook not only captures Poznań’s journey but also serves as a guide to drive future projects, unlocking the full potential of NbS in creating greener, more sustainable cities.

The launched guidebook by Poznań serves as a practical resource for urban living labs in the Invest4Nature project. Though currently available only in Polish, it showcases the city’s experiences with nature-based solutions, offering valuable insights to inspire innovative approaches, foster collaboration, and highlight funding opportunities. While its reach may be limited by language, it remains a valuable tool for those looking to explore Poznań’s journey toward greener, more sustainable urban spaces.
