Guide to Groups

What is a group?

A group is an online space for organisations to store their work and keep their community updated on project developments. Group members can upload news, articles, case studies, events, and any other information their community requires.

Groups function like a normal website but they’re facilitated through Oppla, the European hub for nature-based solutions, providing groups access to an active community of thousands. Even if your project has ended, you can use groups to archive your outputs and resources, spreading your message to thousands that care.

We also offer a bespoke service to personalise your group page, suitable for larger projects involving multiple organisations or requiring a more complex infrastructure, like Atrack.

What content can I share in a group?

Articles, case studies, events, and resources, are the main content styles you can post in your group. Within these categories, you can share videos, pictures, infographics, event details, and more, depending on your needs. Chat to us by emailing support@oppla.eu and we can help you set up a group to match your requirements.

Who can join groups?

Groups are open to anyone that wants to share knowledge or has an interest in learning more about nature-based solutions, biodiversity, and protecting nature. This can include teachers, campaigners, scientists, students, senior academics, business owners, artists- the list goes on. It’s up to individual groups to define membership criteria and review requests to join.

Creating Groups

Who can create a group?

Anyone that wants to share knowledge or has an interest in learning more about nature-based solutions, biodiversity, and protecting nature can create a group. This can include teachers, campaigners, scientists, students, senior academics, business owners, artists- the list goes on. Groups must abide by our terms of service  or they may be terminated.

How do I set up a group?

To create a group, you need to have a verified Oppla account. Click the “Join” button in the top right corner and fill in the short form to make your account. Once it’s set up, head to your profile by clicking the profile icon in the top right corner and press ‘Upgrade to verified user’. You’ll receive an email telling you how to finish setting up your account (it takes 2 minutes!)

Once your account is created, you can view Oppla groups by clicking the “Community” tab on the menu at the top of the screen. At the moment, you need to get in touch with us to create your own group, which you can do so by clicking the link on this page or emailing us at support@oppla.eu

Who can edit my group?

Only group managers can edit group content, menu items, and web pages. Standard group members and Oppla users cannot edit groups- only the content they create within it.

Can my group have multiple managers?

Yes. You can choose multiple group managers that have full admin access to groups to split the workload.

What is a group manager?

A group manager is a lead in a project or organisation who needs full admin access to the group page. Permissions include:

  • Creating membership criteria
  • Reviewing and approving new membership requests
  • Creating and publishing content
  • Reviewing and publishing content written by group members (that are not managers themselves)

Who can be a group manager?

The person who sets up the group is the manager by default. They can appoint different managers who will then have admin access to the group. It’s up to the organisation or project group that you’re part of to decide who is best to have group manager status and appoint them.

To do this, go to your group and select “Group Members” from the menu at the top of the group page. You will now see a list of group members. Once here, press the arrow next to the “View member” button and click “Edit member”. Tick the “Group Manager” box and save your changes to add them as a manager.

If we’re helping you set up your group, we will ensure the group manager is not from the Oppla team, but someone within your organisation of your choice.

Can I edit a group once it’s been created?

Yes. Click “edit” to go to the editable view of your group after creating it. Group members can edit their own content and submit it for review. Only group managers can publish content.

Joining groups

Who can join my group?

You can choose who joins your group. The group manager(s) sets the membership criteria and can approve and deny requests to join. Any verified Oppla users can request to join.

Who views my group content?

Published content can be viewed by any Oppla site visitors. Unpublished changes are only visible to group members (until published by the group manager(s)).

Can group members edit group content?

Only group managers can edit group content (including menu items, articles, events, and web pages). Standard group members and Oppla users cannot edit groups, but they can create and edit their own articles, events, etc, within a group. The group manager has to publish their changes for them.
