European NbS Learning Series: Nature-based Solutions implementation and the IUCN Global Standard

This online learning event introduces Nature-based Solutions (NbS) implementation and the IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions™, a science-based framework that supports the design, implementation and evaluation of high-quality NbS.

The session is aimed at practitioners, researchers, EU-funded project partners and public authorities working on NbS design, monitoring and implementation, including members of the NBS4Drought consortium and the IUCN NbS European Hub. The webinar will provide an overview of key NbS concepts, the structure and purpose of the IUCN Global Standard, and how the Standard can be applied in practice through self-assessment and project development.

Representatives from IUCN, ICLEI and the NBS4Drought project will present the core components of the Global Standard, including its criteria and indicators, and explain how it supports credible, effective and inclusive NbS interventions. The session will also introduce related capacity building initiatives, including NetworkNature and UrbanByNature. Practical examples from NBS4Drought and other initiatives applying the Standard will illustrate how NbS principles can be translated into implementation on the ground. A dedicated discussion segment will give participants the opportunity to ask questions, reflect on how the Standard relates to their own work, and exchange experiences.

The NBS4Drought project focuses on strengthening drought resilience in Europe through wetlands and other nature-based approaches. As the project moves into implementation across multiple showcase sites, ensuring alignment with recognised NbS quality criteria becomes increasingly important. This learning event contributes to shared understanding, cross-project exchange and cooperation within the wider European NbS community.

Webinar agenda:

  • Welcome and introduction to the session and objectives
  • Nature-based Solutions: concepts, challenges and regional collaboration
  • The IUCN Global Standard for NbS and the self-assessment tool
  • NbS in practice: examples from NBS4Drought and related initiatives
  • Open Q&A and panel discussion
  • Wrap-up and next steps

The webinar will be hosted by representatives of IUCN, ICLEI, NetworkNatureEU and the NBS4Drought project team.
