Resource description:

The Ocean Data Viewer (ODV) offers users the opportunity to view and download a range of spatial datasets of biodiversity importance that are useful for informing decisions regarding the conservation of marine and coastal biodiversity.

Requirements:

  • Available in standard GIS formats, while a simple mapping interface enables users to explore individual datasets and overlay them with other data layers.

Advantages:

  • Online data repository where multiple layers can be selected and assessed online. Metadata can also be downloaded for personal use and research.
  • Provides current and reliable data on global, regional and national marine and coastal biodiversity to enable progression to towards multilateral environmental agreements.

Constraints:

  • Please read the associated metadata for each dataset to determine appropriate dataset uses and limitations.

Additional information:

To complement the ODV, the Manual of marine and coastal datasets of biodiversity importance (http://wcmc.io/MarineDataManual) was created to provide an overview of more than 100 global marine and coastal datasets, with detailed metadata sheets for more than half of these.

A list of all datasets can be downloaded from the following link: http://wcmc.io/ODV_data. For a more detailed resource of known marine and coastal datasets globally, please see Annex 2 of the Manual of marine and coastal datasets of biodiversity importance (pp. 32-42).
