Review: We conducted a literature review of 75 academic studies on societal perceptions of rewilding within Europe from 2000 onwards, in collaboration with members of the sister Horizon Europe project ‘WILDCARD’.
Survey: We conducted a survey with a professional market research agency. We collected nationally representative samples of the general public across the 27 countries of the EU plus Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, with a total of 13,763 responses (with a range of 341 – 542 respondents per country). It is the first survey to analyze societal perceptions of rewilding with national samples from across Europe and to analyze attitudes for multiple different aspects of rewilding and multiple potential rewilding actions simultaneously, and one of the first to use subjective beliefs about rewilding as explanatory variables. We conducted spatial and multivariate analysis on perceptions, attitudes, beliefs, and sociodemographic variables on both national and
regional scales.
