Supported by scientific evidence, the respective mandates and decisions of the three Rio Conventions point to multiple pathways for land and ecosystem restoration to be a viable economic activity that can help mitigate planetary crises and foster sustainable development. Initiatives under the Rio Conventions, such as REDD+, and the Forest Ecosystem Restoration Initiative and Peace Forest Initiative, are well-positioned to support countries as they plan and implement SMART restoration targets. The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration provides a key platform for engagement and the post-2020 global biodiversity framework will provide a structure of guidance and ambition.
This event will highlight the value of undertaking land and ecosystem restoration, using ecologically sound principles to realize multiple benefits, including many SDGs and targets under the Rio Conventions. It aims to raise awareness of on the multiple pathways to recovery and resilience offered by restoration activities as well as the tools and technologies to support countries.
