World Cities Report 2024: Cities and Climate Actions

Deadline: 28 March 2024

UN-Habitat is calling for case studies of actions implemented by cities to tackle climate change and its impacts. The selected case studies will be presented in the Annex of the World Cities Report 2024, and will illustrate comprehensive sets of measures that cities can implement to enhance their sustainability.

The case studies will look at various angles of climate action to provide decision-makers and stakeholders at the city level with a reference list of successful measures that could be relevant for their contexts. The intended impact is to increase knowledge on the implementation of climate actions in view of the New Urban Agenda, National Determined Contributions (NDCs) at the city level and the Agenda 2030, and to increase cities’ resilience by highlighting good practices. The case studies will focus on the enablers and key factors of success for such actions.

Case studies will relate to the following sections of the World Cities Report:

  • Case studies on adaptation to specific climate-related hazards;
  • Case studies on actions aiming at building climate resilience of vulnerable urban populations;
  • Case studies on urban design and planning for sustainable cities;
  • Case studies on sectoral interventions and resilient infrastructure;
  • Case studies on multilevel governance for climate action;
  • Case studies on fostering innovation for inclusive climate actions;
  • Case studies on financing interventions for climate change in cities.

All case studies must highlight clear evidence of change and impact. Certain criteria will need to be met for the final selection of case studies - such as regional balance, verifiable implementation and impact in the form of documentation (photos, news stories, project reports etc.), timeframe (with more recent cases, from 2015 onwards, being preferred). They should be aligned to the UN values. For more information, please see the detailed Concept Note below.

This call for submission will close on March 28, 2024, midnight EAT.

If you would like to contribute a case study demonstrating good practice, please fill out the template for submission and send it to judith.oginga@un.org and maud.frangi@un.org.
