Protected Areas and Coherent Nature Networks KEN
About the Protected Areas and Coherent Nature Networks KEN
For halting the loss of biodiversity, the European Biodiversity strategy emphasizes on building a coherent Trans-European Nature Network, linking protected areas with ecological corridors to support nature's recovery. However, the realisation of the 30 30 target –protecting 30 % of land and sea areas by 2030– will require complementary conservation measures outside of protected areas. This includes Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs) and an upscaling of landscape restoration compliant to the Nature Restoration Law. The IPBES and IPCC stress the need for multifunctional ‘scape’ approaches that embed different landscape values into decision-making to halt and reverse continued land degradation. The Protected Areas and Coherent Nature Networks KEN (Knowledge Exchange Network) is dedicated to the landscape approach, as biodiversity recovery and human production and consumption can be reconciled at regional scales.
