Wolong Lake biodiversity conservation and wetland protection project Programme, Lot2

Area characterisation:

Wolong Lake is a typical lake of northern plains of China, which remains well preserved for wetland ecosystems. However, its surface gradually declined from 2002 to 2004, due to significant human activity and lack of protective measures.

Objective:

Biodiversity conservation and wetland protection programme

Actions:

The lake has even experienced a severe drying period. To restore its original biodiversity, different actions were taken:

Construction of wetland buffer, construction of a green corridor, restoration of water facilities and reconstruction of North and South sluice gate, construction of 36 birds islands, with different habitats, construction of the dike L to control water level in the southern part of the lake, construction of 2 birds observation towers and 4 monitoring stations, natural trail around the lake which connects the four monitoring stations.

Ecomuseum:

Wolong Lake is part of the migration route and an important resting place for migratory birds between East Asia and Australia. It is also the place where the biodiversity is abundant. The presentation of 9 world-class endangered ornithological species living there, is regarded as an important part of the exhibition. Different kinds of media methods, such as models, film and images, are used in order to change the passive visit for the active participation.

Moreover, what is emphasized in the exhibition is the ecological habitat of Wolong Lake and the richness of its plant resources, especially sensitive plants. This information is linked in the form of food chain so that the visitors can figure out the connections among them.

A huge model of Wolong Lake and a projection of all kinds of explanatory maps and the satellite map of the lake are used in order to enrich significantly what normal models on the sand table can present and to display vividly the evolution of Wolong Lake.

The whole design concepts, with the purpose to maximize the mobilization of visitors on senses of sight, hearing, and touch, to convey the importance and the diversity of wetlands, and to remind viewers to protect the environment.

This interpretation centre is used to demonstrate biodiversity. It is therefore necessary to teach visitors how to conserve the fragile ecological habitat of Wolong Lake, for example, how to properly observe and photograph the birds in the wetland.

The design especially takes into account the important role of the wetland interpretation centre in science education. In particular, a children's corner is designed. The idea is to have fun by setting up a variety of traditional games for educational purposes.

With an area of 2863 m², the ground interpretation center has three floors. The total height of the building is 17.6 meters.
