This was a really difficult question for us in the beginning. To overcome this challenge we did some pilot interviews. We tested different words and listened to how people talked about their local landscape in their own words. We also spoke to other people that had done similar research in the area and we heard that the term ‘landscape benefits’ had worked well in the past. So that’s something that we ended up using. Also, say for example your method includes for participants reading through a list of ecosystem services, make sure there is time for questions and time for them to digest the information that you are giving them. So it’s partly adapting to local language but also just providing time for asking questions about what different words mean.
