Questions
What evidence do we have that deploying nature-based solutions could bring additional benefits to the application of the ecosystem approach in protecting, sustainably using, and restoring biodiversity? (Question asked on behalf of the European Commission).

Hi All, A colleague is currently working on the design of natural play spaces for children throughout their district. Many areas are vulnerable to vandalism and as a result they tend not to plant much – its doesn’t last – trees get snapped, flowers and grasses trampled on. Does anyone have any ideas or examples to overcoming this as one of the principles of the playgrounds is to allow contact with nature which is difficult without planting. Trees blocking passive surveillance is also an issue in deprived areas, prone to vandalism which we need to consider. Thanks Tadhg GOGREENEX

I see an opportunity for this work to influence local plans which is a strategic legal framework within which development management decisions are made. It struck me that there might be an opportunity to have planners or the extent to which you worked with planners as key stakeholders in research, because a lot of research I’ve done on ecosystem approach and ecosystem science, as I call it, planners are conspicuous by their absence within research groups. I was just wondering whether you do actually have that kind of presence?

If I understand the results of the scenarios correctly what you are basically saying is that Europe will have a loss of ecosystem services and biodiversity, this is inevitable. No net loss is not possible in the European Union, even in the most optimistic scenario. Have you been able to communicate these results to people in a position to make policy decisions and what could we do about it?

Does NNL mean 'no net loss in ecosystem services'? If it's the case, the concept of NNL may neglect the fact that there is a certain degree of requirement/demand for each ecosystem service or thresholds to sustain a society.

With Cifor, we did an analysis of cultural ecosystem services in the Andes, so we understood that cultural ecosystem services respond to a multi-dimensional point of view for the people. Because the people can understand through the culture the other ecosystem services. So my challenge now is, how we can create, if you agree or not, to create a tool for the decision makers, any instrument, that they can understand, that they can include the values of the people. Do you think we need to propose new instruments for the decision makers? According to the local context? Because cultural ecosystem services respond to a multidimensional point of view in the values and perception of the people, how can we communicate this to the decision makers?

The method is only as successful as the way it is planned, executed and fed back. Perhaps the trouble is there are too many methods which are used uncritically. You went through the various methods that are there and I see a lot of this happening with people advocating methods, but the problem is we tend to lack the guiding principles to make sure that these processes are kind of designed, executed and fed back in a way that achieves positive outcomes. Because we see a lot of very very quick, dirty and possibly they’re used uncritically and used poorly because of the lack of really good principles that people do because of the need to invest time and money in making sure that good processes take place.

I was concerned by this idea that by incorporating ecosystem services you can achieve integration. What has surprised me is there hasn’t been any mention of the 12 principles of the ecosystems approach. Having done a tools project for the UK National Ecosystem Approach follow-on, we were very keen to use integration and to develop frameworks using those principles and it seems to me that in a lot of ecosystem work that those principles have either become implicit or conveniently ignored. I was wondering how, if at all, those principles might have impacted into your thinking.

Just a comment not a question - I love the term "conceptual integration". I have seen so many local policy documents that have all the right buzzwords in the general narrative, but when it comes to targets, policy wording and indicators and proposed implementation mechanisms, there is no mention of them anymore. Very helpful.

Terms such as ecosystem services, green infrastructure and nature based solutions are often included in policies; however, I am increasingly aware that they can be used as keywords with little substance to the context in which they are used. Not really a question, but very much looking forward to the webinar opening my eyes to how ecosystem services are (or are not) meaningfully included in policy.

I attended the conference session this morning on Ecosystem Services - I am not sure I understand how my comments can feed into this specific process. I wish to reiterate my concern that this process should be more explicitly linked to what is happening in other parts of the world, in particular Africa. I also suggest that the role of the private sector, from small innovators to large implementors, needs to be defined in partnership terms and involved in policy dialogue as well as strategy development.

What can we do to ensure that the environmental dimension of the SDGs is not getting lost in the indicators? The IAEG proposed indicators in December 2015 were worrying, and those proposed in February 2016 seem even worse. To continue business as usual 'silo' approach, after the SDGs, would be huge missed opportunity. If we really want to change the world and make sure we go in the right direction we need a complete package of mandatory, harmonized and comparable indicators... Is anyone taking care of this on EU level?

In terms of public engagement, urban biodiversity could be a useful indicator, easy to understand by citizens, to measure the " environmental health of cities". How many species are in an average European city? ( small, medium size, big city) What is the typical distribution? How many species has a "healthy city"? Could you provide quantitative examples of cities where Nature-Based Solutions have increased urban or peri-urban biodiversity? What about alien species ? (Usually urban parks and gardens use exotic species) How to develop a simple biodiversity indicator to label cities, areas and interventions? ( easy to use by politicians to explain the impact of their actions to citizens, for example, number of autochthonous species) Many thanks
