1st Report on Pollination, Pollinators and Food Production in Brazil Published

7 February 2019

The Brazilian Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services has published its 1st Report on Pollination, Pollinators and Food Production in Brazil. The report has been produced in partnership with Plant-Pollinators Brazilian Network (REBIPP) and is inspired by and structured along the lines of IPBES assessments.

This document highlights the high diversity of pollinators and warns of the threats caused by the reduction of forests and the use of agrochemicals. In 2018, the economic value of the ecosystem service of pollination for food production in Brazil was estimated at US $12 billion. About 80% of this amount is associated to four crops: soy beans, coffee, oranges and apples.

Over 600 animals visit agricultural crops and over 250 are potential pollinators. Bees account for the majority of pollination but beetles, butterflies, moths, birds, wasps, flies and bats all play a role.
