To halt the loss of biodiversity, the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 emphasizes the creation of a coherent Trans-European Nature Network, linking protected areas through ecological corridors to support nature's recovery. However, the realisation of the 30x30 target—protecting 30 % of land and sea areas by 2030—will require complementary conservation measures beyond protected areas. These include implementation of Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs) and upscaling of landscape restoration aligned with the Nature Restoration Law. Both IPBES and IPCC highlight the need for multifunctional ‘scape’ approaches that embed different landscape values into decision-making to halt and reverse continued land degradation. The Protected Areas and Coherent Nature Networks Knowledge Exchange Network (KEN) is dedicated to advancing the landscape approach, demonstrating that biodiversity recovery and human production and consumption can be effectively reconciled at regional scales.
KEN Aims
- Optimize full use of available research by the policy arena
- Advance knowledge exchange on Protected Areas and Coherent Nature Networks
- Enhance collaboration among KEN community members
- Bridge the science-policy implementation gap for Protected Areas and Coherent Nature Networks
- Highlight case studies and demonstrate impact on decision-making
- Mainstream participatory landscape planning and biodiversity into policy and decision-making
- Build awareness, capacity, and dialogue on the importance of biodiversity, protected areas, coherent nature networks, OECMs and the landscape approach
