Is there not a need to communicate ecosystem services ideas in the language of the target audience to gain the necessary traction for adoption in practice. My work with planners using their frameworks and vocabularies with hooks allows me to be the translator of ES rather than the messiah!

What we’ve found in a lot of examples in the case studies where we’re working with local communities, is that some of the terminology that we might use is not necessarily appropriate to best communicate with local communities. So, we might refer to other terminology, we might talk about nature for example, or nature’s benefits, rather than talking explicitly about ecosystem services. So there is a need to be able to communicate in language which is appropriate for the understanding of targeted groups. The other thing we’ve been trying to do (and I point the audience to the OPERAs website) is, we’ve been trying to build a range of educational videos that are very much introductory presentations to the concepts of ecosystem services and natural capital. They’re trying to communicate what those concepts are about, and clearly there’s an important process in informing people about what those concepts mean in practice and we’ve tried to use these videos as a means of doing that.
