As part of the BioAgora project, the European Commission has promoted the formation of Knowledge Exchange Networks (KENs) to test and pilot the functions of the EU’ Science service for Biodiversity (SSBD).
Transformative change, as redefined by the IPBES Transformative Change Assessment (2024), refers to a fundamental shift in perspectives, practices, and structures. This change aims to address the root causes of biodiversity loss while promoting principles of equity and justice, inclusion, pluralism, and respectful, reciprocal human relationships. It also emphasises the importance of adaptive learning and action. This Transformative Change Knowledge Exchange Network focuses on bringing together and mobilising knowledge and data, fostering collective learning on transformative change processes and solutions that address both indirect and underlying drivers of biodiversity loss and entagled sustainability issues.
Network Objectives
The Transformative Change Knowledge Exchange Network aims to leverage the amplification and scaling-up potential of a ‘network-of-networks’ approach to science-policy-society interfaces. It will do this by expanding and engaging existing networks such as the Transformative Change Cluster of the European Commission’s Research Executive Agency, the Eklipse Transformative Change Community, and several transition research communities. The Knowledge Exchange Network will also explore various root/underlying causes of biodiversity loss and transformative pathways for societal re-organisation. In this sense, one of the particular interests of the Network is to enable dialogue on transforming social and economic systems beyond the imperative of continuous growth and to explore the needs for implementing the Nature Restoration Regulation (NRR).
