How EnRoute can help the impact evaluation framework for nature based solutions

How can EnRoute support the impact evaluation framework for nature-based solutions (IEF-NBS)

Context

The EKLIPSE framework has delivered a set of indicators which can be used to monitor how nature based solutions address different societal challenges[1].

The MAES urban ecosystems indicator framework[2] is designed to measure the condition and services of urban ecosystems. It was developed in conjunction with 10 cities and it is now tested in the EnRoute[3] project. EnRoute has the ambition to test the use of the MAES urban ecosystem indicators across spatial scales.

Both indicator frameworks overlap, in particular for those challenges where nature based solutions are based on ecosystem services. However, the NBS framework needs to be broader. NBS are not only derived from ecosystem services but also from interactions across elements of the social-ecological system.

The task force on methods and indicators, set up by DG RTD, has to deliver an updated IEF-NBS to be used by the H2020 projects on nature-based solutions in cities. This updated framework needs to deliver a set of core indicators so that

  • As many societal challenges as possible are addressed by the H2020 projects
  • At least 1 – 2 indicators per challenge common between all projects
  • For each indicator : Common protocols and / or standards are used to allow meta level analyses
  • Link with MAES indicator framework for condition and ecosystem services and with sustainable development goals

What can EnRoute provide?

EnRoute experts will meet on 24 October in Tallinn in the context of the NBS conference. EnRoute plans to organize a morning session to support the updated version of the IEF-NBS by:

  • Cross linking the MAES and EKLIPSE indicator frameworks: Which indicators for urban ecosystem condition and urban ecosystem services are relevant to measure impact of NBS with respect to the different societal challenges. Which EnRoute cities can share expertise (protocols to measure the indicators). JRC is preparing this cross link.
  • How can the performance of cities on urban green infrastructure (condition and ecosystem services) be compared across scales (EU and local scale) and between cities. What are the messages for NBS projects and for the IEF-NBS
  • How can local knowledge on governance and implementation be upscaled. How can EnRoute contribute to case studies for NBS
